Setting Up & Flashing the OS

Once you have your Muon device and accessories ready, the next step is to install the operating system and configure the device. This process registers the device to your Particle account, installs Device OS, and prepares the Muon for development or deployment.

By the end of this guide, you will have:

  • Installed the latest version of Device OS for Muon
  • Install and activate any SIM profiles and activates the cellular connection
  • (Optionally) configured Wi-Fi
  • Registered your device in the Particle Console
  • Flashed the latest firmware
  • Powered on the device for first boot

This process takes about 3–5 minutes. Once complete, the device will boot into Device OS, establish network connectivity, and become fully operational.


Step 1: Navigate to Setup Tool

Open setup.particle.io in a compatible web browser.

Supported Browsers

  • Google Chrome (recommended)
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Opera
  • Any Chromium-based browser with WebUSB support

Make sure WebUSB permissions are enabled. Safari and Firefox are not supported.


Step 2: Begin Setup Process

Open up setup.particle.io to:

  1. Sign in or create a Particle account
  2. Connect your Muon device via USB-C in the browser

Step 3: Flash Device OS

The setup tool will automatically:

  • Download the correct version of Device OS for your Muon
  • Flash it over USB
  • Configure networking
  • Set up the device for Particle Cloud access

This step typically takes less than a minute.


Step 4: Register and Assign the Device

During setup, you'll be prompted to:

  • Assign the device to a Product (or use your Sandbox if you're an individual developer)
  • Optionally name the device for easier identification
  • View the device online in the Particle Console

Setup Complete ✅

That’s it! Your Muon is now ready for development.

  • The device boots into Device OS
  • Network connectivity is established via cellular or Wi-Fi
  • The device connects to the Particle Cloud
  • It becomes manageable via the Particle Console
