Welcome to B-SoM Developer Docs

The Particle B-Series System-on-a-Module (B-SoM) is a flexible cellular hardware solution designed for IoT products that need reliable global connectivity. Built around the Nordic nRF52840 MCU and paired with region-specific cellular modems, the B-SoM combines BLE, NFC, and Particle Device OS support in a compact, production-ready form factor.

Overview

B-SoM modules integrate processing, connectivity, and security features into a single board-mountable package. With support for LTE Cat M1 and Cat 1, the B-SoM covers a wide range of regional deployments and bandwidth requirements. Each variant is built to meet certification standards and designed for smooth migration from prototyping to mass production.

B-SoM Variants at a Glance

VariantCellular / Region / ModemKey Highlights
B404XLTE Cat M1 (NorAm: US, Canada, Mexico), u-blox SARA-R510S-01B modemUses Nordic nRF52840 MCU; includes BLE, NFC-A tag; supports Particle EtherSIM; power input needs 3.6-4.2 V, ~600 mA for the modem, plus 3.3 V domain for MCU.
B504LTE Cat 1 (Americas), Quectel EG91-NAX modemHigher data rate; more current draw (VCC must supply ~2 A); includes support for BLE/NFC; uses same nRF52840 MCU; similar form factor to other B-Series modules.
B524 / B523LTE Cat 1 (EMEAA / Europe region), Quectel EG91-E modem; B524 has broader region support, B523 more focused on Europe. Also nRF52840; has BLE/NFC; fallback to 2G/3G where applicable; needs robust power (3.6-4.2 V for modem, separate 3.3 V domain) and suitable antenna layout. Certified for CE etc.
